A Worker's Compensation Voice for Self-Insured Employers In Wisconsin

2019 Annual Meeting & Workers' Compensation College

Our second annual event will take place May 21st - 23rd, 2019 at the beautiful Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, WI!

Employer members are invited to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting, which is scheduled for the Grand Geneva on May 21, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.  A luncheon will be served to members in attendance at the close of the meeting.  In addition to the usual organizational concerns, there will be a report by the Legislative Committee on its progress in our ongoing efforts to effectuate legislative changes favorable to Wisconsin employers, both immediately and in the future.

Employer and vendor members are invited to attend the 2019 WCSI Workers' Compensation College which will commence at 1:00 p.m. on May 21, 2019. The first session will conclude that afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m.  The fact patterns for our two fictitious Wisconsin worker’s compensation claims (Gomer Pyle v. Wally’s Service Station and Barney Fife v. County of Mayberry) will be revealed, and there will be law school-style presentations on legal, medical and discovery issues in both claims.  Following the afternoon session, college attendees will be transported by Jones Travel of Elkhorn to the Gage Lake Geneva Cruise Line (https://www.cruiselakegeneva.com/)  dock, for a two-hour evening dinner cruise on beautiful Lake Geneva.  Attendees will be transported back to the Grand Geneva by charter upon completion of the cruise.

The College will resume at 8:00 a.m. on May 22, 2019, and run that day until approximately 5:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be available to attendees during the day.  Presentations will include the taking of testimony of expert witnesses from the two fictitious claims, including an orthopedic surgeon, a psychologist, and a vocational expert; these presentations will be conducted by attorneys, supervised by an administrative law judge, and recorded by a court reporter, as if they occurred at a workers' compensation hearing. Also included will be a presentation by a physiatrist on common pain remediation procedures and narcotics, and brief presentations by attorneys on psychological claims, vocational claims, and other topics pertinent to the two fictitious claims.  The all-day session on May 22, 2019 will be followed by a dinner and drinks at the Grand Geneva, with a performance by “The Dang-Its” (https://dang-its.com/) which will undoubtedly include a variation on “The Fishin’ Hole,” the theme music from The Andy Griffith Show” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvSXdO7SDCE) and bluegrass tunes reminiscent of those performed by “The Darlings” on the show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeNe5MLgyHM).

The College will conclude on May 23, 2019 with a one-hour session on settlements from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and a two hour mock hearing in one of the fictitious worker’s compensation claims.  Participants in the settlement round table will include an administrative law judge, an attorney who represents applicants, an attorney who represents respondents, and an experienced claims professional, who will evaluate settlement possibilities in one of the fictitious claims.  The mock hearing will be conducted by attorneys, supervised by an administrative law judge, and recorded by a court reporter, and will include the examination and cross-examination of the applicant and a respondent witness.  The College will conclude at noon on May 23, 2019.  Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits, Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) Property & Casualty CEUs, HRCI credits and SHRM credits will be available for attendees.

Gomer and Barney look forward to meeting you soon!
